If you could do one thing to help your creative practice what would it be? The need to keep learning

by | Jul 26, 2018 | 0 comments

Periodically we do research and look for insights into development needs.  There has to be in this day and age a constant need to learn in order to survive.  To this end we are running a major survey at the moment on the development needs of the creative sector.  If you haven’t taken the survey then if you could that would be great. – You can access the survey here >>

As part of this earlier this week we asked our friends on Facebook “If you could do one thing to help your creative practice what would it be?” The answers are always so to the point and usually answers you don’t expect.

As one respondent put it, “Invest in it. Time, energy, focus, commitment, money (if you have it), learning, will.” Another, “Give it more time!” and some, like this example go into a bit more from the operations side, “% of fee on acceptance of commission, delivery of final files on payment of balance.. whoever invented the 30 (or 60 or 90) day after invoice payment was not a freelancer…”

But these insights are really helpful.  Part of our remit with the survey is to present it to International, National and local government and non-government organisations, these insights help to determine where the shortfalls in development needs are and to lobby to get these needs recognised and addressed at policy level so that they can be incorporated into educational policy for schools and 3rd level eduction.

At the moment I am teaching a course on Global Entrepreneurship to 27 High School kids from all over the United States her in Dublin.  A lot of the insights that we have come across here can be, and are incorporated into the learnings that we do with the kids.  Imagine what the answer to the question would be if from an early age we were given these skills.  I for one would have loved to have had the opportunity to take a study abroad course like this at their age.  With the way that careers and contract work are changing the notion of a 9-5 job with one company for an extended period of time is disappearing fast.

By the time these kids are in the work force most people will be working on short term contracts around specific projects and in locations as diverse as home, the beach, college and sometimes maybe in-company.  They will need to think on their feet from day one in order to survive so they need this skills.

This means that it is even more critical that we, the older ones, know this skills for we will have to compete in the same marketplace.  We need to be lean, we need to be agile but most importantly we need to know what we don’t know or need help with and we have to be open to learn.

Now, if i was to ask you the question ‘If you could do one thing to help your creative practice what would it be?”,What would you answer?

Reboot yourself!

Why would you do something so stupid as not giving yourself time to reboot and to check things over, install new updates and make sure that we have deleted all of the old files we don’t need anymore? I mean that’s just plain stupid, of course we do that, NOT!!

OK, so now you stand out, what then? Visibility and marketing.
